Most sober living facilities only care about the money, and personal recovery in not a priority, at least in my experience. So, I had attended this presentation on Oxford House, and was instantly interested because it sounded different. When I was a week from graduating treatment, I had an interview set up at Oxford House Tres Palms, and was starting a new job. When I did my interview for Oxford House, I was a little nervous considering I’ve never been asked so many questions trying to get into a recovery home or sober living. But I knew when I first walked into the house, that was where I wanted to be. The guys in the house were all welcoming, and the oxford sober living vibe was great. Adriana F. – Resident Oxford House, Inc. acts as the coordinating body for providing charters for the opening of new Oxford Houses. It also acts as the coordinating body to help individual houses to organize mutually supportive chapters. Through chapters individual houses are able to share their experience, strength and hope with each other to assure compliance with the Oxford alcoholism symptoms House concept and its respected standardized system of operations. The charter of each Oxford House requires that an Oxford House meet certain minimum requirements of Oxford House, Inc. Experience has shown that Oxford Houses work for both men and women, but not in the same house. Once you find a house that has a vacancy, you can call the contact person to set up an interview. But I knew that there would be another opportunity.While residing in Oxford House I learned how to live with integrity, how to be self-sufficient, and how to be of service. Each member has one vote, no matter how long they’ve been there. Kortnie Clark – Resident While serving on the World Council, I learned so many different things including about different committees and the history and purpose of the World Council. I got to meet and know other World Council members.I moved out of Oxford House in April of 2022 in good standing. I’m an active alumnus for Chapter 1 as well as the Central Arizona Alumni Association. Without Oxford House, I wouldn’t have the great life I have today. I am forever grateful for Oxford House and the lives it saves daily. I’m originally from St. Louis Missouri I came to Florida in June of 2022 and spent some time at the Salvation Army. Jared H. – Resident I was still in active addiction and lost my baby to foster care. Like other sober living homes, people in Oxford Houses come and go. Often several members of an existing House will move into the new House to provide a core group of new members who already know how an Oxford House works. Call the contact person for each house you’re interested in to set up an interview. Each member has one vote and majority rule applies except that 80% of the members must agree in accepting new persons for membership. They are very welcoming and have been treating me like family since I came into an Oxford House. I’m currently the HSC Rep for Chapter 7 and it’s been a wonderful experience doing it. I’m grateful and blessed for the opportunity to live and be a part of Oxford. Once accepted, an Oxford House member can stay as long as they like, provided they stay drug and alcohol free, are not disruptive, and pay their share of house expenses. Those who have benefited from an Oxford House have acquired enthusiasm for the Oxford House concept. In their enthusiasm, they have been anxious to share Oxford House with any recovering alcoholics and drug addicts who want to establish an Oxford House in their community. This monthly or weekly amount varies from state to state and house to house and can range anywhere from $125 a week to $250 a week. Every Oxford House member attributes his sobriety to Alcoholics Anonymous and/or Narcotics Anonymous. Oxford House will not charter a house with fewer than six individuals because experience has shown that it takes at least six individuals to form an effective group. Growing up, I was very blessed with a very loving and supportive family who always told me I could do anything I set my mind to. It was so bad I wouldn’t even go outside no matter how bad I needed to go. Stay Connected: To my surprise, my state selected me to run for the resident seat for Az. In September of last year, I went to the World Convention and was elected onto the World Council and I am living in complete gratitude. It has given me room to grow and thrive and be of service and, as a result of all those things, I have become a better person. I have now successfully completed probation and I still have a job in a treatment facility in Tucson, AZ. Two people that knew I was out there saw his arrest on jail view and came to the woods and brought me to their house. This was a continuous cycle that was centered around the fact that he made drugs and I was addicted to the drugs he made. He told me I was going to have sex with him and I told him that I definitely would not. The concept and the standardized, democratic, self-supported Oxford House system of operations itself are far more persuasive than any individual. In its simplest form, an Oxford House is a shared residence where people in recovery can live together and support each other in a drug and alcohol-free environment. The Chapter is the place where all the members of the Oxford House family of individual houses help each other to stay on track and to remain effective.
